Helsinki :: I ate bear

“I ate a Danish. Better than eating someone from Finland.”
Jarod Kintz

Went to Helsinki for two days, the annual retreat for La Familia. The four of us used to live together and have know eachother for decades now, so we have a yearly tradition. This year it was my turn to choose where to go and I found out Helsinki has a beer tram(!) Unfortunately, the tram stopped running two weeks before our trip 😦 but we still found stuff to fill our days.

Andreas had to get a later flight because of work, so us girls got the shopping out of the way after arriving and finding our hotel. We checked in, left our stuff, went out and got me new shoes (@Forum) #JustGirlyThings 😛 Then we found the closest restaurant/bar to our hotel and just relaxed and drank wine until Andreas joined us. Naturally, he was allowed a beer, the poor guy, before we all went to bed.

The next day we checked out stuff I would recommend to everyone going to Helsinki:

Visit the Helsinki Cathedral. It’s beautiful and centrally located.

Inside the Finnair Skywheel - quite blue... Also, one of the pods has a see-through floor and champagne service (but it costs A LOT).

By the harbor you can also find the Hakaniemen Food Hall - they had an abundance of cool, weird and incredibly tempting food and sweets #Omnomnom

Right across the street from the Helsinki Cathedral you'll find Savotta, a restaurant that serves such delicacies as reindeer and bear! Delicious stuff! www.ravintolasavotta.fi

SUMMARY :: HELSINKI

If you’re going to Helsinki and I have to recommend just one thing: Get the bear. It’s not too easy to find anywhere else (depending on where you’re from) and it was absolutely delicious. I would recommend Savotta as our experience was fantastic, the food, the staff, the drinks. We didn’t have a reservation, but they managed to squeeze us in.
If you’re pressed for time I (always) recommend wandering around. That’s how I get a feel for the place I’m in, rather than rushing from place to place to “see everything”.
Helsinki is not a place I fell completely in love with and can’t wait to go back to, but I have nothing negative to say about it. It was a great weekend in a really nice place and I’m happy to have been there. Go see it. Eat the bear, see the cathedral and go to a bar. The people are super-friendly, that’s probably the best thing I take away from my Helsinki-experience and that is a great compliment to a country: “your population is welcoming and cool” 🙂
