Alnwick (pronounced “Annick”) is a charming, exceedingly British place about 2 hrs drive south-east of Edinburgh. Barbro wanted to go there because of the botanical garden and the renowned Treehouse Restaurant. Since it was her turn to decide on a place to go this year, off we went. Because Alnwick is rather small we decided to base ourselves in Edinburgh (Old Waverley hotel in Princes Street is a good hotel with a perfect location for a base) and make a road trip out of it. So the Friday was spent visiting Edinburgh Castle (I’d been to Edinburgh three times before, never saw the castle #ForShame), tasting some whisky, petting an owl called Tea(!!) and shopping. On Saturday we got up super early, fetched our hired car from EuropCar at Waverley Station and drove down for our lunch appointment at the Treehouse.

We were so lucky with the weather this weekend it’s almost ridiculous. Pretty much sunny the entire time, I had to put my hood up on my jacket once.

Anyway, to make a potentially longwinded post shorter: I recommend a trip to Alnwick Gardens. Bring the kids, include the castle (it doubled as the castle in Harry Potter 1 & 2) and eat lunch or dinner at the Treehouse, the food and the atmoshpere was lovely!
Make sure to make a reservation! We initially wanted dinner, but had to settle for lunch because they were fully booked. They often host weddings and such too, which makes if even more difficult to get a table.
