I can’t believe my second leg of the trip is over already. I’ve covered New York and Washington DC and I’m currently sitting at Union Station waiting for a train to take me to Baltimore Airport.

Heading for Miami, beach, sun and about 30 degrees Celsius (that’s somewhere in the 80’s for you other, non-Celsius people, I think).

Lazy days, I am on holiday after all and I certainly felt the effects of a rigorous schedule during my stay in DC, I had to take an hours nap around midday… First day I walked around to get to know the place and the first thing that comes to mind is: compared to New York this city is really clean. The buildings around here are a dreamscape for someone like me. (ie. interested in the beautiful architecture, but not enough to become an actual architect)… In DC, not just the museums, but the government functions are housed in something that looks like Caesar’s private mansion, (or bath house… whatever), and it’s gorgeous. Statues, monuments and buildings everwhere worth a closer look, I spent my time doing just that. I had initially decideed against any guided tourist thing in DC, because I cosidered it small enough to walk around on my own, but last minute I decided to give a night tour just to see the monuments (including the White House) lit up at night. The tour was scheduled to take 2,5 hours. It took three, aand I am so glad I took it. Again with the Big Bus Tours, I must say, they work for me. The commentary was so funny and I made some new friends, four women from Minnesota and one of the crew called Henry (or as we dubbed him, “Andrew”). Sometimes you just meet people with the same kind of humour as you, you gotta love it.

Anyway, the monuments at night is one of the highlights of DC for me. It was stunning. And we got a thourough walkthrough of the Franklin D. Roosevelt memorial, which is huge(!). One of my favourites.

My last day in DC I walked around the city and ate lunch at the lawn close to the Lincoln Memorial, unfortunately the Reflecting Pool was drained and it’s a bit early for the Cherry Blossoms, but the weather was spectacular. I managed one whole museum here in DC, the National Museum of American History. I saw the exhibition on the First Ladies and the history of the revolution as well as a bunch of artefacts in passing before I made a dumb purchase. Took me a week, but I got there! I bought a Christmas bauble with the White House on it 😀 Now, for those of you who don’t know I already have a bauble from the Moulin Rouge in Paris and a Guinness one from Dublin. I want to some day in the future decorate my Christmas tree with baubles from places I’ve been, so I am acutally really happy with this one, it’s just gonna be a bit of a hassle dragging it all over the States 😉

Anyway, I met up with my friend, Amy, in the evening. I met Amy on my trip to Korea in 2011 and we’ve kept in touch ever since, and she took me on a boat ride on the Potomac before we went out to eat dinner. Great boat ride, amazing company and good food. The best possible way to end my DC-leg.

Unfortunately, the internet in the hostel was a bit sub par so my camera wouldn’t connect with my iPad. All my fantastic pictures are stuck in limbo until I get somewhere with better wi-fi. (here’s looking at you, Miami!)
